Caretaker period

On 17 July 2010, the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, announced that a federal election would be held on 21 August 2010 and as such the Australian Government has assumed a caretaker role.

Only updates, which adhere to the Caretaker Conventions, will occur to this website until the result of the election has been determined.

Social Inclusion Week

Social Inclusion Week is on again this year from 20‑28 November, and it’s going to be even bigger and better than last year. With a range of community events being held all over Australia as part of the National Street Party, there’s something for everyone.

It’s all about connecting communities, supporting people and starting a discussion about social issues that are important to the lives of Australians.

New body image initiatives announced

On 27 June 2010 the Minister for Youth, Kate Ellis, announced new Australian Government initiatives to promote positive body image among young Australians.

The new initiatives aim to build young people’s resilience to negative body image pressures and promote leadership on this issue in the fashion, media and advertising industries.

Youth Development Support Program

Applications for the Youth Development and Support Program 2010-11 are now open. Applications close 9 July 2010.

The Youth Development and Support Program is a national program designed to provide financial support to non-government, not-for-profit organisations to deliver community-based projects to develop young people by creating practical and innovative opportunities in their communities.

The 2010-11 Round will offer two streams of funding: Stream 1 to support Community-based organisations and Stream 2 to support National Youth Organisations. Eligible organisations are able to apply for grants appropriate to their project, up to a maximum of $40,000 for Community-based organisations and up to $70,000 for National Youth Organisations. It is anticipated that the majority of grants will be around $15,000.

Youth Budget Statement released

The second ever Youth Budget Statement, What’s In It For Young Australians? A quick guide to the Budget 2010–11 is now available.

It explains how this year’s Federal Budget affects young Australians.

Having emerged from the global recession as a world leader, this Budget is good news for young people – returning Australia to surplus early, strengthening the economy and securing the future.

A National Youth-led Convention

The Minister for Youth, Kate Ellis MP announced her intention to host a national Youth-led Convention.
